Laughter Yoga

Practical Happiness

What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a unique and innovative wellness practice that combines laughter exercises with yogic deep-breathing techniques. Unlike traditional yoga, which involves various physical postures, Laughter Yoga focuses on intentional and hearty laughter.

It was created by Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor from India, and his wife Madhuri Kataria, a yoga teacher. Laughter Yoga, often referred to as "Hasyayoga," is now practiced worldwide, bringing joy and numerous health benefits to people of all ages.

The Benefits of Laughter Yoga

The benefits of Laughter Yoga are as diverse as they are remarkable. This practice transcends the conventional boundaries of exercise and wellness, delivering numerous physical, mental, and emotional advantages:

  • Stress Reduction: Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, our body's natural feel-good chemicals. This helps alleviate stress and promotes relaxation.
  • Improved Mood: Laughter boosts the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with happiness. Regular practice can help combat feelings of sadness or depression.
  • Enhanced Immunity: Laughter Yoga strengthens the immune system by increasing the production of immune cells and antibodies. This can help ward off illnesses and infections.
  • Cardiovascular Health: Laughter improves blood circulation and relaxes blood vessels, reducing the risk of heart diseases and lowering blood pressure.
  • Pain Management: Laughter releases endorphins, which act as natural painkillers. People suffering from chronic pain conditions often find relief through regular laughter practice.
  • Improved Lung Function: Deep laughter involves deep breathing, which enhances lung capacity and oxygenates the body's cells, promoting overall vitality.
  • Enhanced Social Bonds: Laughter Yoga is a group activity that offers connection and social interaction, strengthening relationships and building a sense of community.
  • Boosted Confidence: As you engage in laughter without inhibition, your self-esteem and self-confidence naturally improve.

How to Practice Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga sessions are typically conducted in groups, led by a certified Laughter Yoga instructor. However, you can also practice it on your own or with friends and family.

Here's a basic guide on how to do Laughing Yoga:

  • Find a Comfortable Space: Choose a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be disturbed.
  • Warm-Up: Begin with some gentle stretching exercises and deep breathing to prepare your body and mind.
  • Clapping and Chanting: Start by clapping your hands and chanting "Ho, ho, ha-ha-ha!" This helps break down inhibitions and sets the mood for laughter.
  • Laughter Exercises: Engage in a variety of laughter exercises, such as "Milkshake laughter," or "Greeting laughter" These exercises can be as simple or as creative as you like.
  • Breathing Exercises: Incorporate deep-breathing exercises into your laughter practice. Inhale deeply through your nose, expanding your belly, and exhale slowly through your mouth. This helps you stay relaxed and oxygenated.
  • Laugh Wholeheartedly: During the laughter exercises, laugh with your whole body, not just your voice. Let go of inhibitions and embrace the silliness of the moment.
  • Cool Down: Wind down your session with gentle stretching and a brief period of silent meditation or deep breathing.
  • Share Laughter: Encourage others to join you in laughter, as laughter is contagious. The more, the merrier!

Laughter Yoga Origin Kate Cook Biz

Laughter Yoga Origin

Laughter Yoga was created in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria, a medical doctor in Mumbai, India. Dr. Kataria was inspired by the profound health benefits of laughter and wanted to find a way to share these benefits with others. He developed the concept of Laughter Yoga after researching the science of laughter and its positive effects on the mind and body.

Dr. Kataria started the first Laughter Yoga club with just five people in a park. Today, Laughter Yoga has grown into a global movement, with thousands of clubs and sessions held worldwide. It has touched the lives of millions, promoting physical and mental well-being through the simple act of laughter.

Practical Happiness Team Bonding Days

A powerful, practical day to bring joy, and to foster immediate skills that create and maintain good mental health habits - Psychotherapist Jon Bockelmann-Evans and Nutritional Therapist Kate Cook, who between them, have nearly 50 years of experience, lead this upbeat, interactive and potentially life-changing training!

Society talks about our emotional states in terms of 'wellbeing' or 'mental health/illness'. The current narrative tends to imply that people are either profoundly happy or profoundly unwell. We have ups and we have downs. Most of the time, our daily worries, stresses and frustrations are not serious mental health problems - they are emotional health imbalances.

It is this hinterland that Kate and Jon help you navigate, giving you the tools you need to carve a path to joy and lasting contentment.  You will have a lot of fun, laughter, and delight on the day, as Kate and Jon help you to throw the 'joy switch on' making this an ideal workshop for team bonding, and work community creation.

Jon is an extremely accomplished Corporate trainer with 25 years of experience under his belt working for clients such as Nike, Dow and Merck Pharma. He delivers immediate fixes for everyday emotional health issues and his training courses, keynotes and workshops always have a strong evidence-led practical element, so attendees should anticipate joining in and boosting their happiness levels via a range of wellbeing modalities including Laugher Yoga.

Kate helps create the foundation of being well and happy by showing us how to correct nutritional imbalances, that fuel our bodies and in particular our minds.  Like Jon, Kate has nearly 25 years of delivering wellbeing programmes in some of the world’s top companies. Kate is also a certified Laughter Yoga teacher (tutored by none other than the Master, Jon Bockelmann-Evans!)

Jon's training course has already had such a brilliant impact on our community. The session was delivered with such authenticity and soul, which was a wonderful beginning to the term! Crucially, the session provided us with lots of useful strategies to use in the future, meaning Jon's impact and his message will last for a long time. I highly recommend Jon, as this has been transformative for our community.
